Maija Kolehmainen is a general (2000) and a plastic surgeon (2004) in Helsinki University Hospital (HUCH), where she has worked since 1999, focusing on breast, transgender, pelvic and genitourinary surgery.
After fellowship by the Finnish Surgical Society in Innsbruck (Universitätsklinik für Plastische und Wiederherstellungschirurgie), Austria, in 2003, she introduced the Transverse Myocutaneous Gracilis (TMG) flap to breast reconstructions in Finland. In addition to microsurgery, her interest in breast reconstructions has been propeller flaps.
As a consultant of plastic surgery for colorectal, urological and gynaecological departments for fifteen years, she has developed some techniques to pelvic and genitourinary reconstructions, e.g. the reconstruction of the pelvic floor and the posterior vagina with a pedicled TMG flap (2007) and the functional bilateral gracilis phalloplasty (2010, with Dr. Suominen).
Dr. Kolehmainen is a member of the Finnish Surgical Society, the Finnish Association of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, the Pyrenean workshop for plastic surgery and the faculty in the genitourinary module of International Master’s Degree in Reconstructive Microsurgery program (Universidad Autonoma de Barcelona). She has published 10 peer reviewed articles and 4 book chapters, and given international invited lectures on breast reconstruction, genitourinary reconstruction and transgender surgery.
